Reference, your tone, matched. Switch while it plays.

Each demo is one guitar take through the same amp, then through two different 4x12 cabs: the reference through one, your tone through the other. Matched is your tone through the IR that IR MatchMaker 2 made from those two files. All three play at the same loudness, exactly as in the app. Pick a demo, press play and switch with 1, 2 and 3.

How it works

Four steps from a tone you love to an IR you can load

The app walks you through the same four steps every time. It does the measuring; you do the listening.

Hear it before you save it

Press 1, 2 or 3 while it plays: the reference, your tone, or your tone through the new IR. All three play at the same loudness, so a louder file never fools your ears. When both files are the same performance, the reference follows your playhead, so you compare the very same note.

The reference, your tone, the match and the IR itself, drawn live as you turn a knob. A match score from 0 to 100 tells you how close the match gets, measured on the real IR you will save. Smoothing sets how much detail it copies, Safety keeps it from boosting what your recording does not have, and Amount blends from your tone to the full match.

Most amp sims have one IR slot. If your recording already has your cab in it, IR MatchMaker 2 saves your cab and the match as one IR that replaces your cab. Recording a DI or an amp without a cab? Load your cab and your tone is played and matched through it.

Tick 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz, minimum, linear and mixed phase, 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float, and save the whole set at once. Every file plays at the same level and none of them can clip. Existing files are never overwritten, and every name tells you its rate, depth, phase and length.

If your recording has almost nothing above 10 kHz where the reference does, no IR can add it, and the app says so instead of boosting noise. It also tells you when it found only a few seconds of playing, when it removed clipped hits, or when a boost would be very large.

Add up to eight files per side and they are averaged into one tone, each file one vote. The app finds the parts where the guitar plays and skips silence, count-ins, noise and clipped hits by itself, and you can drag across a waveform to use just one section of a song.

What does IR MatchMaker 2 do?

It makes a cab IR that moves your guitar tone towards a tone you love. You load a reference (a stem from a mix, a record or a rig you love) and a recording of yours, listen to the reference, your tone and the match side by side, and save the IR as WAV files for any IR loader.

I own IR MatchMaker 1. Do I have to pay for version 2?

No. Version 2 is a free update for every owner of IR MatchMaker 1.x. It is already in the downloads of your original order: open the order in your account or use the download link in your order e-mail. Version 2 installs next to version 1, so you can keep both.

What is new in version 2?

Everything: it was rebuilt from scratch. A new sound engine that measures only where the guitar plays, A / B / C listening at the same loudness while it plays, your own cab IR in the match, several files per side, a live match score, honest warnings, batch export of every sample rate and phase, and a new design that fills any window size.

What should I use as the reference and as my tone?

Both should be guitar playing a similar part with a similar amount of gain: a rhythm part against a rhythm part works best. The reference can be a stem from a mix or a rig you love, your tone is your amp sim, profile or mic’d cab. Several reference files give a steadier target, and you can drag across a waveform to use just one section.

Which IR loaders does it work with?

Any IR loader, amp sim or modeller that loads WAV IRs. The app saves plain mono WAV files at 44.1, 48 or 96 kHz, in 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float, from 512 to 8K samples long.

Which phase should I save?

Minimum phase adds no delay and is the safe default. Linear and mixed phase keep the attack shape in a different way and add a little delay. The app can save all three at once, so you can pick by ear in your loader.

Can it add highs or lows my recording does not have?

No IR can create what is not in the recording. When your tone has almost nothing in a range where the reference does, IR MatchMaker 2 tells you and leaves that range alone instead of boosting noise. The Safety knob sets how careful it is.

Is it a plugin?

No, IR MatchMaker 2 is a standalone app for Windows and macOS. It makes IR files that you load in your favourite IR loader or amp sim, so the match works everywhere and costs no extra CPU in your session.

Which systems does it run on?

Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), and macOS 11 or newer on Intel or Apple Silicon. The download includes installers for Windows and macOS and the User Guide (PDF).
